The whole plot of the story is richly developed with an engaging storyline and a perfect blend of a happily-ever-after with a touch of reality. After re-reading the book a second time, I craved to find Samantha’s journey with the book and her whole road map of the upcoming Aster Springs Series. I was overjoyed when she agreed to this Spotlight Interview.
Getting To Know Samantha Leigh
Q.1 What led you to write The Small-town Romance? As most of your books are of that genre, What pulls you into that genre?
S.L: I love to read romance, and the stories I enjoy most are the ones that feel warm and cozy. It’s the same when I’m writing: I get the most fun and satisfaction out of creating stories and characters that have a warm and inviting found family vibe.
Q.2 The world of Aster Springs, Especially Silver Leaf Ranch enthralls readers, Have you ever visited any ranch, and if any what was your experience with the place?
S.L: I haven’t been to the kind of ranch that comes to mind when we talk about small town romance, but I’ve spent a lot of time in wine country because I love it. I even had my wedding at a winery!
Q.3 Can you tell the readers more about “Wallflower”?
S.L: Wallflower is about Violet—a shy and nervous marketing assistant who dreams of designing bridal couture—and Chord—a cold and standoffish NHL legend who swears off women so he can take his underdog hockey team to the Cup in his final season before retirement. Of course, he hires Violet because she’s too timid to give him the kind of trouble women have caused him in the past, and he’d never fall for a girl like her… right?
Q.4 What were your motivations whenever you felt like being stuck with writer’s block?
S.L: I tend to make friends with writer’s block because it usually means I’ve gone a little off script with the story or the characters and I need to go back a few steps to start again. Getting on with life to let the problem tick away in the back of my mind seems to do the trick!
Q.5 This book also hits the right spot for Sports Romance lovers, What kind of research did you do to bring life into “Wallflower”?
S.L: I read hockey romance. I Googled a billion questions about the oddest things. I watched YouTube clips. I scoured Reddit. I asked my hockey romance author friends for advice. At some point, I had to force myself to stop researching and start writing!
Q.6 Do you have favorite lines and characters from the “Wallflower”?
S.L: My favorite line changes all the time. Today it’s this one from Violet: I wanted so badly to do the right thing that I never gave myself permission to do the thing that felt right. This was something I learned while writing Wallflower. I had to get out of my head and stop worrying about what I should write and just write the story that felt right to me.
Q.7 There are so many beautiful and deep messages in the book “ Wallflower” like chasing the dream, family love, mental health awareness, and the healthy and real message about love. I also liked how the story highlights the two different sides of ambitions and dreams. What message do you hope to convey from your writing?
S.L: The themes of Wallflower are universal to so many of us and I hope readers connect with the struggles of these characters. Chord and Violet ask themselves the same questions we face every day. Is it selfish to follow our dreams? Is it possible to follow our dreams and not be selfish? What do we owe the people who love us, and what do we owe ourselves? Should we do the right thing if it feels wrong in our gut, and can we be comfortable doing the thing that feels right in our hearts if it doesn’t match the picture we’ve painted in our heads?
Q.8 How did you make Chord Davenport such a greenest flag out there?
S.L: I adore this question! I have the most amazing husband and acts of service are his love language. I feel like I’ve found my sweet spot writing book boyfriends who are strong and sensitive, confident and perceptive, and the ultimate providers and protectors for the women they love.
Q.9 Tell me about the cover page, I loved how detailed it is and how vintage is just so like Violet and that scissor and measure tape up there adds charisma into it.
S.L: Thank you for asking about the cover! So much love and energy and attention to detail went into this design. Echo Grayce at Wildheart Graphics is the creative genius who took my wish for big romantic vintage vibes and worked her unique magic. All the little easter eggs are phenomenal—Violet’s scissors and tape, Chord’s hockey stick, the backwards baseball cap on the silhouette, the texture added to every element. It’s divine.
Q.10 Can you tell us anything about your upcoming books in the Aster Spring Series?
S.L: All I can say right now is that the plan is to write five books—one for each Davenport sibling.
Q.11 Any teaser for your readers ?
S.L: I don’t want to confirm the main characters for book two yet but there have been a lot of readers in my DMs asking and guessing who it might be—and almost everyone has been correct so far!
Q.12 Where can readers learn more about you and your writings? (i.e. website, Goodreads, Instagram, Facebook page, Twitter ).
